A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block visible behind assisted us verify the footage.
We are checking video footage and photographs circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images were from was based on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
