Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, even after an extended period of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Just last month, the mayor had strongly criticized Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and accusing him of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a new statement, Adams reversed course, revealing he now intends to appear with Cuomo in communities where he holds significant backing.

“It is crucial to mobilize the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how vital this race is,” Adams stated.

Adams continued, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I plan to visit to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose increasing popularity has drawn interest worldwide and represented hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

In a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an independent after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for his assistance with government enforcement actions across New York City.

During a separate media briefing on Thursday, the mayor responded to reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “I'm meeting Andrew this evening.”

The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
